Annual Awards of the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic Czech Grand Design 2009 Awards - The second nomination round


Press release, Prague, February 2010 We would like to inform you on the results of the second round of the 4th year of the Annual Awards of the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic / Czech Grand Design 2009 Awards. The existence of these awards in the field of design has been supported by immense interest from the media and the public in previous years. Based on the interest of the public, Czech Television has decided to include the recording of the Czech Grand Design 2009 Awards gala evening into its programme. The winners from the individual categories will be presented on March 12 at 8 p.m. on ČT2, i.e. one week after the Annual Awards of the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic gala evening in Stavovské divadlo (The Estates Theatre).

The Academy consists of 70 members (with 60 active for this year of Czech Grand Design Awards), who are experts in the field of design – theorists, curators, and journalists – and who elect the best designers and companies in 8 categories.


The annual awards of the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic are awarded in the following categories:
Designer of the Year – the Award of the Minister of Culture
Fashion Designer of the Year
Graphic Designer of the Year
Photographer of the Year
Distributor of the Year
Manufacturer of the Year – Industrial Design Award of Ministry of Industry and Trade
Discovery of the Year – Česká spořitelna Award
Hall of Fame

The results of the first nomination round from the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic were announced during the nomination meeting for the Czech Grand Design 2009 Awards on December 12, 2009. All nominees in all categories were made public.

Now, we would like to inform you on the results of the second nomination round for the Czech Grand Design 2009 Awards that was closed on January 15, 2010.

The following nominees in the Designer of the Year category, which included 33 nominees, received the highest number of votes and advanced to the third round:
HipposDesign – nominated for the Foga vase and furniture in the National Technical Library
Lucie Koldová – nominated for the design of the Treasury table, the Cheeky boxes system, and a chair designed for Vienna Design Week
René Šulc – nominated for a new collection of lights for Lucis, the Verso table lamp, and the Swing rocking chair designed for mminterier

The following nominees in the Fashion Designer of the Year category, which included 25 nominees, received the highest number of votes and advanced to the third round:
chatty – nominated for its collection Dance 09/10 presented at Designblok 09
Eva Jiřičná – nominated for the Eva Jiřičná collection for BeldaFactory
Jakub Polanka – nominated for his autumn/winter, spring/summer 2010 collection and a limited collection for Simple

The following nominees in the Graphic Designer of the Year category, which included 26 nominees, received the highest number of votes and advanced to the third round:
Petr Babák / Laboratoř – nominated for the comprehensive visual style, the information system and the six-kilograms catalogue for the National Technical Library (co-operation: Jan Matoušek, Jaromír Skácel, Tereza Šerá a Richard Rozhoň) and for the graphic concept of the Projektil architekti 2002/2008 publication
Štěpán Malovec – nominated for the graphic design of the Artěl publication and the visual style of the Fresh exhibition in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague
oficina – nominated for the visual style of Prima COOL TV

The following nominees in the Photographer of the Year category, which included 22 nominees, received the highest number of votes and advanced to the third round:
Ester Havlová – nominated for the Fragmenty collection of photos and the Fragmenty publication
Bára Prášilová – nominated for the photos of the Quiksilver Women collection, for a series for Esprit LN, and for photos for the Křehký publication
Robert Vano – nominated for photos for an exhibition in Mánes, the Platinum Collection book, and the New Kid on the Block series for Dolce Vita

The following nominees in the Distributor of the Year category, which included 12 nominees, received the highest number of votes and advanced to the third round:
Futurista Universum – nominated for the new Futursita Universum showroom
mminterier – nominated for a new showroom in Prague designed by architect Stanislav Fiala / D3A
SIMPLE Conceptstore – nominated for a concept, the support of Czech brands, and a collection from Czech designers under the label of Simple (J. Polanka, Z. Vacek, H. Mertlová)

The following nominees in the Manufacturer of the Year – Industrial Design Award of Ministry of Industry and Trade category, which included 26 nominees, received the highest number of votes and advanced to the third round:
Beznoska – nominated for the development of orthopedic tools designed by Anna Kozová
Botas – nominated for limited editions of shoes and accessories and the comprehensiveness of the re-edition project of Botas 66 in the cooperation with the designers Jan Kloss and Jakub Korouš
Elton hodinářská – nominated for the PRIM ARTEU 2009 collection designed by Olgoj Chorchoj
mminterier – nominated for launching new products, continuous collaboration with Czech designers, furniture for the National Technical Library, and the Swing rocking chair

The following nominees in the Discovery of the Year category, which included 29 nominees, received the highest number of votes and advanced to the third round:
Lucie Koldová – nominated for the design of the Cheeky boxes and her diploma work at the AAAD in Prague - Home Fitness furniture
Zuzana Kubíčková – nominated for the ZIMA collection
Klára Šumová – nominated for the inlaid table designed for Křehký by Designblok and the design of the Láska lamp

A new innovation in this year of the Annual Awards of the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic is a new category entitled the Czech Grand Design 2009 Award of the Public. Fans of design have an opportunity to choose the winner across the categories of Designer of the Year, Fashion Designer of the Year, Graphic Designer of the Year, and Photographer of the Year through sms voting or by nominating individual candidates at www.czechgranddesign.cz. The voting inquiry will be published in newspapers and magazines of media partners and at the project website on January 21.

The voting in the Hall of Fame category takes the form of a closed nomination. The winner will enter the Hall of Fame during the Czech Grand Design 2009 Awards gala evening.

As usual, the main partner of this year of annual awards is Česká spořitelna, which has supported the project of Czech Grand Design since its beginning. The winner in the category Discovery of the Year – Česká spořitelna Award will receive a check for CZK 50,000.

The project partners are Vitra koncept and UPP.

The official supplier of the Czech Grand Design 2009 Awards is Hotel Jalta.

The Czech Grand Design Awards are supported by the following institutions: The Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, and The National Theatre.

More information about the gala evening, as well as the prominent figures that will hand out the awards to the winners, plus information about the design of the award itself and the exhibition’s architecture will be provided at a press conference, the date of which has yet to be specified.
